轉貼文章:(大家學英文) “Hot stocks!?” We often come across ideas about stock picking, whether it’s due to a megatrend (e.g. alternative energy, green, organic, high tech, social networking, on line shopping, demographics, globalization, global warming etc.etc.) or due to a particular product or service or situation (acquisition, mergers & acquisitions, potential IPO’s etc.). Some ideas turn out great, and investors (early and not so early) benefit. But some ideas stood where they were, just ideas, and investors lost money on these stocks, some heavily. Recently some stocks suffered massive losses on bad earnings news, or perception by the market that they are losing the market battle. Some recent examples: Netflix—down another 35%—after a drop of 75% from their high this year First Solar—down 25% (1 day) (Solar energy) Crocs (the plastic sandal)—down 39% in one day
So far in 2011, 16 stocks register a single day drop of 30% or more. The big one is in 2008—111 stocks had such horrific single day collapses. A few things to watch out for when an idea like this comes up: 1) Momentum stocks—some stocks keep going up, and look like a sure thing to go in, and then, something happened, and you were left holding the bag, e.g. Green Mountain Coffee, Red Robin Gourmet—all down over 35% from their peaks. 2) Shifts in strategy that kills business models—Netflix charged higher fees for streaming videos, and customers ran away. 3) Buy what you know—although you may like a product or a service, the stock may not always preform accordingly, e.g. Crocs or Netflix. So, as one pro said: “If you buy hot stocks, you’re likely to get burned.” Have a cool day.
